What is SNAP?
The Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) is a federal nutrition program that helps individuals and families purchase food. Benefits are provided monthly through an Electronic Benefits Transfer (EBT) card, which can be used at most grocery stores, supermarkets, and participating farmers markets to buy eligible food items.
SNAP helps millions of Americans put nutritious food on the table and serves as one of the nation's most effective tools for reducing food insecurity.
If approved, SNAP benefits are loaded onto an EBT card each month. The card works much like a debit card and can be used to purchase a variety of foods, including:
Fruits and vegetables
Meat, poultry, and fish
Dairy products
Bread and cereals
Snacks and non-alcoholic beverages
Seeds and plants that produce food
The amount a household receives depends on factors such as income, household size, and certain allowable expenses. Individuals can receive anywhere from $24 to $298 every month for grocery assistance.
Eligibility for SNAP is based on household size, income, and other household circumstances. Many working families, older adults, individuals with disabilities, and people experiencing temporary hardship may qualify.
Ohio's Broad-Based Categorical Eligibility expands the gross income limit to 200% of the federal poverty level. Most households qualify under this rule, which also eliminates the asset test.

These figures represent 200% of the 2025-2026 federal poverty level for the 48 contiguous states and D.C. Even if your gross income falls below the 200% threshold, you must also pass the net income test. Net income is your gross income minus all allowable deductions.
Income guidelines are updated annually and may change each October.
